DISCUSSION n. 12: CHRIST IN CONCRETE - due April 14

COMMENT:

NO MORE THAN 3 PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE THE SAME CHAPTER

Choose one chapter in the second part of the book (after page 60) that somehow in your opinion "does not fit" well with the rest of the book.  Explain the reason of your choice.

REPLY:  find a comment you don't agree with and explain WHY you think that particular chapter does fit or adds something relevant.

  1. Fiesta: Chapter 8, is the chapter I think doesn’t fit in well with the rest of the book. In this chapter, Paul’s physical growth and sexuality is emphasized with the lustful event on the train and an incidental meeting with Gloria. The focus of this book to me is mainly of poverty and the struggles of the immigrant working class. I understand that most of this book follows Paul’s journey through his own coming-of-age story, but I was more interested in his growth as a person, his mind and soul, than his physical urges.

    1. I actually feel like this chapter added a bit more to Pauls character. It made him appear a little more relatable to other readers because it described his downfalls/struggles in all aspects of his life.

    2. I think it fit . We are learning so much about Paul and this event is a natural part of life .i find it strange when authors leave love and sex out of life stories .

  2. Chapter 11 of part 4 (Fiesta) felt like a chapter that was out of place in the book. This chapter seemed all over the place and did not seem to fit with the theme of the storyline. Although, this chapter offered a lighter mood, I could not focus on all the details of the wedding. I also started getting caught up with who said what because the focus of this chapter felt more random. Despite Luigi playing a large part in Paul's life, I did not think that his wedding details deserved a place compared to the rest of the chapters of the book.

  3. Part V (ANNUZIATA) Chapter 2 made me question what made Paul finally break and give up on religion. The rest of the book made it seem like Paul and his family were all very religious people, but the accident that led to Nazone's death seemed to change Paul immediately. It was very weird for me to see Paul's religious views change so drastically, but I cannot judge him after he witnessed such all he’s went through. Compared to the rest of the book, this section made me think Paul was a little more volatile and easy to crack at any given moment.

  4. I think that chapter 3 of TENEMENT was strange . I don't think any of the chapters didn't fit but I don't think this one was really necessary . It stood out to me because the cripple and her children were very creepy and psychic powers are not always sincere . It made me wonder for the rest of the book .
